Orders & Ordering
I placed an order online but did not receive a confirmation. Should I order again?
No. Please contact our customer service department at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm, or send an email to custserv@heinemann.com. Please include your billing name, address, and the approximate date and time of your order. It is likely that we received your order, but, because of a typographical error in your email address or other mail server errors, the confirmation never reached you.
I'm having difficulty ordering online. I keep receiving an error message. What do I do?
Please copy the error message and send it to webmaster@heinemann.com. It would be helpful if you included the type of computer you were using (MAC or PC), the browser and version number (e.g. Internet Explorer version 5.0), what page you were on in the site, and at what point the error occurred (e.g. when you clicked the checkout button). We will work quickly to fix the problem. In the meantime, if you would still like to place your prepaid order, please contact our customer service department at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm ET.
Can I place an online order with a purchase order?
Not at this time. All online book orders must be prepaid. Special offers and discounts are applicable for prepaid online orders only. However registration for workshops or online courses may be submitted with a purchase order.
What is the status of my order?
In stock, online orders usually ship within a business day from the date you placed your order. Please allow 3 business days for second-day air delivery, and 2 business days for overnight delivery. Titles that are out of stock will ship as soon as they become available. You may check your order status at anytime by contacting our customer service department at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm ET, or by emailing your inquiry to custserv@heinemann.com.
I received a defective or damaged book. What do I do?
Contact our customer service department at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm ET. They will see that a new book is shipped out and make any arrangements for return of the damaged book.
I did not receive all the books I ordered? What do I do?
Contact our customer service department at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm ET. They will research your order and make corrections as necessary. Any discrepancies on out-bound shipments must be reported 14 days from date of invoice.
I placed an online order and I'd like to change the billing/shipping address. How can I do this?
Most in stock orders ship within a business day of being placed. Many ship the day the order was placed. If the order was just placed, our customer service department may be able to change the address information of your order. Please contact them at 800.225.5800 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm ET.
A book I'd like to order is not yet published. When will it be available? May I order it before it is published?
Any not-yet-published title on our website may be preordered. The book description page of the website will provide a title's status and expected availability date. Your order will ship as soon as the book is available.
I just placed an online order and was charged sales tax. Aren't online transactions tax-free?

We currently collect sales tax for orders shipping to Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Maryland, New Jersey, Missouri, and Massachusetts. Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri and New Jersey residents will be charged the appropriate sales tax on the subtotal. Author Guidelines
My book proposal has been accepted by Heinemann Drama, and now I need information on how best to prepare my manuscript and art for release. Can you give me some advice?
The Author Guidelines will give you, the author, direction on how best to present your manuscript to us once it is final. We cover everything from disk and art package preparation to a brief discussion of permissions. We explain what you will see as your book progresses, what you should do at each stage, and with whom you'll be working. We've also included a Sample Art Chart to help you track your art and to release to us when your manuscript is completed.

Permissions/Form Release Letters for Authors
As an author developing my manuscript, I need to know what, if anything, I will need to get permission for before I can use it in my book, and how to go about obtaining these permissions. Can you advise me?

Desk/Exam Copies
How do I request a desk or exam copy?
What's the difference between exam copies and desk copies?
Exam copies are books being considered for adoption as a required student text in an applicable college course. Desk copies are for a professor who has adopted the book for their course and have not previously received an exam or desk copy of the adopted text.
Do I have to return my exam copy if I don't adopt the book?
No. The book is yours to keep unless you have requested the book "on approval" which allows you to review it for course consideration and return the book within the time period allotted on your invoice or pay for the book.
I received an invoice with my exam copies. I thought they were complimentary.
What you received with your order is a packing slip. This allows you to check your slip against what you've received. Packing slips will also indicate if a book is unavailable and provide the date of expected shipment when applicable. Invoices are mailed under separate cover and will show an amount due on the bottom right hand side. If you receive an invoice for an exam/desk copy with an amount to be paid, please contact the college department.
